Who we are:

You may not have heard of us, but you’ll know our brands! A.S. Watson is the world's largest international health and beauty retailer with over 16,300 stores in 29 markets. Each year, over 5.9 billion customers and members shop with our well-known retail brands, both online and offline, including the likes of Superdrug, Rossman, Kruidvat, Watson’s, Marionnaud, The Perfume Shop, and many more.

Retail is undergoing a seismic shift in consumer behaviours and with new and evolving routes-to-market presenting opportunities and challenges - such as transition from bricks to clicks, rapid delivery models, in-store technology deployment – whilst at the same time Tax Authorities are increasingly legislating for real-time reporting and invoice/transaction clearance.

Technology is therefore critical to our future business success.  Further, for us in Tax, adopting the right technology, managing high volumes of data effectively and having data at our fingertips for decision-making and insight is vital. Effective technology offers us chances to reduce risk, enhance value and meet our tax compliance obligations, on-time, accurately and cost-efficiently. In the retail environment, this is essential.

The Group Tax team’s primary role is to support and advise A.S. Watson Group as well as our European Business Units (BUs) with a diverse portfolio of tax advisory, compliance, risk management and planning matters across the full spectrum of direct and indirect taxes. You will be part of the European Tax Team reporting to the A.S. Watson Group Tax Director (Europe) and Head of Indirect Tax.

This is a green-field role for you to consolidate and grow our initial base of deployed tax technology, with many projects, challenges and opportunities, both here and on the horizon.  Existing and forthcoming real-time reporting requirements in many of our largest markets at POS and from the ERP, and our Oracle Fusion transformation across over 30 markets are priorities for us, this role will also therefore require a level of travel across our European markets.

A typical day in this role includes:

  • You’ll predominantly focus on supporting our European BUs, and work closely with Finance and IT HQ colleagues in Hong Kong and across Europe on group tax technology projects.  Coordinating also with CKHH Group Tax colleagues, A.S. Watson Asian BUs, and other CKHH divisions where opportunities arise.
  •  The implementation of the long-term tax technology, data and analytics strategy at the heart of which is a Common Tax Data model which ensures data is right at source, is analysed and extracted for both compliance and insight, building dashboarding where appropriate.
  •  Working with business partners and leading Tax input on the Oracle Fusion Finance transformation project to ensure systems are both configured for Tax requirements and that we avail of all functionality which will transform how tax operates.
  •  Partnering with the business to build investment cases to select and deploy suitable tax technologies - converting opportunities into solutions e.g. implementing VAT SaaS across the group, and tax engines for our Marketplaces.
  •  Identifying opportunities for automation (including robotic process automation) and developing the roll-out of Alteryx across the Group.
  •  Reinforcing and developing auditable and tech-enabled tax control frameworks.
  •  Understanding the digital agenda of the Tax Authorities and working with multiple teams to consistently implement technology solutions to ensure we are digitally Tax compliant everywhere we operate and we avail of learning and synergies as we go.
  •  Developing team members to drive the tax technology, data and analytics agenda.
  •  Advising on and supporting other group technology projects relating to e.g. UK & Italian PPT,  and meeting the reporting and tax calculations requirements of OECD Pillar 1 & 2 developments.
  •  Assessing and advising on business and automation opportunities for any new tax mandates e.g. online sales taxes, DST, retail and green taxes.

This role would be a good fit for you if:

  • You enjoy collaboration through forging positive business relationships at all levels.
  • You know you add value through combining technology with tax capability.
  • You may be looking to move into industry from a Big 4 tax tch team.
  • You get satisfaction through understanding tax, finance and business challenge, and finding technology solutions.

What you’ll need:

  • Experience in Tax aspects of ERP systems design, configuration and / or implementation of tax engines (preferable in Oracle).
  • You have a proven and hands-on track record of getting into the detail and delivering successful tax technology projects through critical thinking, research and analytical skills.
  • Project management / change management experience in large scale Tax / Finance / IT transformation, including maintaining strong governance and driving Steering Committee work and decision-making.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, both verbal and written, in a multicultural environment where various stakeholders are using English as a second language.
  • Team player and self-starter with a positive outlook.
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic and ready to take on responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • A formal tax or Accounting qualification would be advantageous, as would experience and knowledge of Alteryx
FMCG/retail experience desired but not essential.
  • Fluent in English; no foreign language skills are required, but may be an advantage.

What you’ll get from us:

  • Competitive salary, benefits and bonus scheme.
  • A fantastic learning and development offering to explore.
  • Discounts for you and your family from some our much-loved retailers, including Superdrug and The Perfume Shop.
  • 25 days holiday with an option to buy more.

  • Excellent refer-a-friend scheme with up to £2000 up for grabs!
  • Free financial and mortgage advice from some of our partners.
