The Role:

We are looking for a VAT Manager (Europe) to join our Group Tax team within A.S. Watson. You will be working alongside the Senior VAT Manager (Europe), the Head of Group Tax (Europe) and our Operating Business Units (BUs) with a diverse portfolio of compliance, risk management and planning matters; in connection with VAT and other indirect taxes. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and proactive VAT professional, with an excellent background in VAT advisory and VAT project management.


What you will be doing in the role:

  •  You will work as part of the European Tax Team with direct reporting into the Senior VAT Manager (Europe), and you will have additional interaction with the CK Hutchison Tax team members
  • The Tax team’s primary role is to support and advise A.S. Watson Group as well as our local BUs in connection with relevant taxation and VAT issues.  You will work to ensure full VAT compliance for the BUs, whilst seeking to mitigate the administrative and financial costs relating to VAT and indirect taxes, where possible.
  • You will work with the Senior VAT Manager (Europe) in providing:
    - Indirect tax advisory services to the local BUs 
    - VAT project management services, predominantly to the UK BUs 
    - Assistance with tax authority audits and inspection

You will also:

  • Identify and manage VAT process and system improvements, driving change within the local BUs to reduce risk and enhance the quality of VAT/Intrastat/EC Sales reporting
  • Take ownership of the process by which VAT codes are applied to new and existing retail products, for the UK BUs in particular
  • Provide expertise and lead on specific VAT compliance matters, where required e.g. partial exemption calculations and automation/digitalisation of reporting requirements (MTD, and equivalent)
  • Advise the local Finance teams and tax resources on all VAT and indirect tax matters
  • You will forge positive business relationships with external advisors, and all internal stakeholders
  • This role will involve occasional travel within Europe

What we will need from you:

  • Degree Holder with at least 4 years’ experience in European VAT in-house, or in Big 4/mid-tier firm
  • Technically strong, with a Professional European VAT qualification
  • FMCG/retail experience desired but not essential
  • Fluent in English, other European languages an advantage
  • Good communicator and highly motivated
  • Team player and self-starter
  • Excellent project management and execution skills
  • Proficient IT skills
